Used in combination with cookies, a &lt;a href="http://www.webopedia.com/TERM/W/Web_beacon.html"&gt;Web beacon&lt;/a&gt; is an often-transparent graphic image, usually no larger than 1 pixel x 1 pixel, that is placed on a Web site or in an e-mail that is used to monitor the behavior of the user visiting the Web site or sending the e-mail. When the HTML code for the Web beacon points to a site to retrieve the image, at the same time it can pass along information such as the IP address of the computer that retrieved the image, the time the Web beacon was viewed and for how long, the type of browser that retrieved the image and previously set cookie values.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Web beacons are typically used by a third-party to monitor the activity of a site. A Web beacon can be detected by viewing the source code of a Web page and looking for any IMG tags that load from a different server than the rest of the site. Turning off the browser's cookies will prevent Web beacons from tracking the user's activity. Volgens de auteur zijn normale lineaire conversion funnels waardeloos omdat maar weinig mensen gelijk aan een funnel op een site navigeren.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hij stelt dat het hub and spoke model veel beter werkt, waarbij de hub een specifieke pagina is en de spokes (spaken) de klikpaden daarvandaan. Sommige klikpaden resulteren in een conversie, terwijl andere geen of exits opleveren.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Normale lineaire conversie funnels zijn klaarblijkelijk goed voor het inrichten van bijvoorbeeld een order bestel proces, waarbij je een aantal stappen verplicht moet doorlopen. Different measurement methods show more visits or lower conversion rates than others, now we are closer to knowing how far to bend the lens to bring the picture into focus.”&lt;/em&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;strong&gt;Jim Sterne&lt;/strong&gt;, author of “Web Metrics: Measuring Web Site Success”&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;&lt;a href="www.redeye.com"&gt;RedEye&lt;/a&gt; released The RedEye Report, a study into the accuracy of IP and Cookie-based online management information. RedEye believes it is the first organisation in the world to compare IP and Cookie-based web metrics to a known set of results, allowing them to produce a free report that:&lt;br /&gt;&lt;ul&gt;&lt;li&gt;identifies the level of inaccuracy of IP-based and Cookie-based Web metrics for two different Web sites&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;explains why such errors occur&lt;/li&gt;&lt;li&gt;recommends what decisions they can be used for&lt;/li&gt;&lt;/ul&gt;&lt;p&gt;The study examined data from two of the UK’s busiest ecommerce websites, &lt;a href="http://www.asda.com/"&gt;http://www.asda.com/&lt;/a&gt; and &lt;a href="http://www.williamhill.co.uk/"&gt;http://www.williamhill.co.uk/&lt;/a&gt;. Deze Toolbar geeft statistische informatie over web traffic, alsmede link informatie van Websites.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Alexa internet is een hulpprogramma dat je gratis kunt downloaden en dat je vervolgens op je harde schijf installeert. Zodra je je web-browser opstart, wordt ook Alexa opgestart.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Hoe werkt Alexa? Zodra je web-browser via een URL ergens een web-pagina opvraagt, wordt die URL door Alexa onderschept. Tegen de tijd dat de opgevraagde web-pagina op je scherm staat heeft Alexa een heleboel nuttige informatie voor je opgehaald. De code die aan de home page toegevoegd moet worden, zorgt ervoor dat de bezoekers een plaatje of een stukje code laden vanaf de webserver van de aanbieder van de teller. De server houdt dan bij wie dat plaatje geladen hebben, en dat zijn dus uw bezoekers. Dat kan die server bijhouden, omdat de browser van uw bezoeker het IP adres doorgeeft aan de server, namelijk om te zeggen waar het plaatje heengestuurd moet worden.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Door extra informatie (parameters) mee te sturen bij de aanvraag voor het plaatje, kunnen de andere gegevens, zoals versie van het operating systeem en schermresolutie, ook nog eens opgeslagen worden door de server. Hierbij is het wel nodig, dat uw bezoeker Javascript aan heeft staan, dit is namelijk nodig om deze gegevens als parameters door te geven.&lt;br /&gt;&lt;br /&gt;Als er nu bezoekers op uw pagina komen, dan worden de IP adres gegevens en de andere informatie die via de parameters zijn doorgegeven, opgeslagen in een database. De server voegt daar de tijd van bezoek aan toe. Dit is de tijd van de server van de leverancier van de teller. Als die server in een andere tijdzone staat, is er een verschil. Daarom bieden sommige tellers, maar niet allemaal, de mogelijkheid uw eigen tijdzone op te geven. Dan worden de opgeslagen tijden van uw bezoekers aangepast.
